IAWMH Position Statement in Support of Pregnant Women’s Access to Effective Mental Health Treatment

This position statement aims to clarify recent confusion stemming from the misinterpretation of certain scientific data that has been publicly disseminated. If left unaddressed, such misinformation may provoke fear, guilt, and uncertainty—particularly among women experiencing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) who are currently pregnant or planning to conceive. While the IAWMH respects scientific debate and encourages knowledge sharing, it emphasizes that accuracy and transparency in offering information on all treatment options (including risks of not being treated), comparative risks and benefits associated with each clinical decision must be comprehensive and grounded in the full body of evidence rather than shaped by unsubstantiated expert opinion or fragmented data.
